1. Description

The TLM 170 R is a studio condenser microphone

featuring five switchable directional characteris-

tics: omni-directional, wide-angle-cardioid, car-

dioid, hyper-cardioid and figure-8.

Its most important features are

• especially low self noise level combined with

highest output capability,

• a newly developed transformerless circuit,

• extraordinarily true sound transduction free of

coloration.

The microphone has a balanced, transformerless

output.

The 3-pin Switchcraft connector has the following

pin assignments:

Pin 1: 0 V/ground

Pin 2: Modulation (+phase),

Pin 3: Modulation (–phase).

1. Kurzbeschreibung

Das Kondensatormikrophon TLM 170 R ist ein Stu-

diomikrophon mit den fünf umschaltbaren Richt-

charakteristiken Kugel, Breite Niere, Niere, Hyper-

niere und Acht.

Es zeichnet sich aus durch

• besonders niedriges Eigengeräusch und hohe

Aussteuerbarkeit,

• ein neu entwickeltes, transformatorloses Schal-

tungskonzept

• besonders saubere, freie und verfärbungsfreie

Klangübertragung.

Das Mikrophon hat einen symmetrischen, übertrag-

erlosen Ausgang.

Der 3-polige Switchcraftstecker hat folgende Be-

legung:

Pin 1: 0 V/Masse

Pin 2: Modulation (+Phase)

Pin 3: Modulation (–Phase).

angles up to ±100°, where the frequency response

is flat up to 10 kHz. In view of these facts it fol-

lows that the diffuse-field response – namely the

response in a lively acoustic environment with re-

flections entering the microphone from all direc-

tions will also be linear. This is of vital impor-

tance in the recording environment and insures

that the tone color of reverberant sound will not

be altered by the microphone. This is in sharp con-

trast to an omnidirectional pressure transducer in

which the diffuse and direct-field response never

match!

No resonance effects are used to obtain the char-

acteristics mentioned above. As a consequence,

the microphone features excellent transient be-

haviour and transmits all transient phenomena of

music or voice without distortion.

The entire exposed surface of the capsule, includ-

ing the membranes, is at ground potential making

it immune to electric as well as atmospheric con-

ditions and dirt. In order to protect the capsule

from mechanical shock transmission it is elasti-

cally suspended.

A rotary switch at the back permits selection of

five directional patterns: besides the three usual

ones – “omni-directional”, “cardioid”, “figure-8” –

the intermediate positions “hyper-cardioid” and

“wide-angle-cardioid” are also available. The “hy-

percardioid” is superior to the “cardioid” for dis-

criminating against sound to the right and left of

the source, whereas the “wide-angle-cardioid” is

preferable for wide sound sources such as large

instrumental sections or choirs.

The pattern switch is noiseless, with an unavoid-

able, short pause during which the microphone is

“dead”.

A sixth switch position of the pattern switch shows

the capital letter RRRRR (for Remote Control). In this

switch position, the TLM 170 R directional charac-

teristics can be remote-controlled with the aid of

the N 248 power supply unit (s. chapter 3.2).

Two additional switches are to be found at the

back of the microphone:

The left one (“– 10 dB”) lowers the sensitivity of

the microphone by 10 dB and should only then be

used when the ensuing amplifier cannot tolerate

the high output level.

dern auch für Schall, der seitlich innerhalb eines

Winkelbereichs von mehr als ±100° einfällt. Da-

her verlaufen auch die Diffusfeld-Frequenzgänge

des TLM 170 R bis 10 kHz parallel zu den in Ab-

schnitt 6 gezeigten 0°-Grad-Kurven. Praktisch be-

trifft das die indirekt über Reflektionen im Aufnah-

meraum zum Mikrophon gelangenden Schallantei-

le. Damit wird auch ein etwa mitaufzunehmender

Nachhallschall durch das Mikrophon in seinem

Klangcharakter nicht verändert.

Da zum Erreichen der genannten Mikrophoneigen-

schaften keine Resonanzwirkungen genutzt wer-

den, ist das Impulsverhalten des Mikrophons aus-

gezeichnet, und es vermag alle Ausgleichsvorgän-

ge in Musik und Sprache unverfälscht zu übertragen.

Die gesamte Oberfläche der Kapsel einschließlich

der Membranen liegt auf Massepotential und ist da-

her unempfindlich gegen elektrische und atmo-

sphärische Einflüsse und gegen Schmutz. Die Kap-

sel ist zum Schutz gegen Körperschallübertragung

elastisch gelagert.

Mit einem Drehschalter auf der Rückseite können

zusätzlich zu den gebräuchlichen drei Richtcharak-

teristiken „Kugel“, „Niere“ und „Acht“ auch die

Einstellungen „Hyperniere“ und „Breite Niere“ ge-

wählt werden. Die „Hyperniere“ gestattet – besser

als die „Niere“ – rechts und links des aufzuneh-

menden Objekts postierte Schallquellen auszu-

blenden, während die „Breite Niere” vorteilhaft

zur Übertragung ausgedehnter Schallquellen ein-

gesetzt wird.

Die Umschaltung der Richtcharakteristiken erfolgt

geräuschlos, mit jeweils einer kurzen Umschalt-

pause, während der das Mikrophon „stumm“ bleibt.

Eine sechste Schalterstellung des Richtcharak-

teristikumschalters zeigt den Großbuchstaben RRRRR

(für Remote Control = Fernbedienung). In dieser

Schalterstellung können die Richtcharakteristiken

des TLM 170 R mit Hilfe des Netzgerätes N 248

fernumgeschaltet werden (siehe dazu Kapitel 3.2).

Auf der Rückseite des Mikrophons TLM 170 R be-

finden sich zwei weitere Schalter.

Der linke senkt das Übertragungsmaß des Mikro-

phons um 10 dB und sollte nur verwendet werden,

wenn bei sehr hohen Schalldruckpegeln für

nachfolgende Geräte die Gefahr der Übersteue-

rung besteht.
