Gimbal Head
Owner’s
Manual
GH-M1
Thank you for choosing Magnus.
The Magnus GH-M1 gimbal-type tripod head is an
ideal accessory for wildlife or sports photography
because it ensures precise and fast camera aiming
with a heavy lens. The GH-M1 mounts onto most
tripods with a 3/8-inch threaded stud, and it’s
designed to balance a lens along its vertical and
horizontal axes. The sturdy curved aluminum main
arm supports up to 30 pounds, yet it balances the load
so that even a large lens feels weightless. Lenses that
are large or heavy enough to prevent quick moving
and aiming can be tilted or swiveled effortlessly
and remain securely in place once positioned. An
Arca-type quick-release plate is included for swift and
secure camera mounting and swapping.

Maximum Load: 30 lb. (13.6 kg)

Mounting the Gimbal to the Tripod
1 Tighten the pan lock until it’s secure.
2 Align the 3/8-16
mounting socket
with the tripod’s
3/8-16 post and
screw it onto the
tripod.
If your tripod has
set screws on the
platform, tighten them
to secure the GH-M1
to the tripod.
Important! Make sure the head is screwed on securely so
there are no gaps between the gimbal and the tripod.
Balancing a Lens
The correct balance is achieved when the lens and camera
can be tilted at any angle—up or down—and remain in
place. With the proper balance, the lens can move effortlessly
and stay pointed in any position without locking the swinging
arm. Carefully follow these steps:
Horizontal Balance
1 Tighten all locking knobs so the camera and lens won’t
accidentally move while mounted on the gimbal.
2 Loosen the plate lock, and adjust the horizontal balance
of the camera and lens. Tighten the plate lock until
secure.
3 Loosen the swinging arm lock, and tilt the lens up and
then down at a 45° angle. If the lens wants to return to
a center position, the camera and lens are horizontally
balanced.
4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until your lens is balanced along its
horizontal axis.
Vertical Balance
1 Loosen the platform locking knob, and adjust the height
to vertically align the center of the lens with the axis of
the locking knob. Retighten the platform locking knob
after every adjustment.
Attaching the Quick-Release Plate to
the Lens
The Arca-type quick-release plate has a 1/4-inch
mounting screw that attaches to most lens collars. Use
a 3/8-16 bushing (not included) if your lens collar has a
3/8-16 socket.
Warning! Always hold your camera and lens while
following the attaching and balancing instructions.
1 Remove the quick-release plate by loosening the
plate lock and lifting it off the plate platform.
2 Attach the quick-release plate screw with the D-ring.
Tighten the screws with a coin, slotted screwdriver,
or hex key.
Mounting a Lens
1 Tighten the swinging arm lock, pan lock, and
platform locking knob. Make sure they are secure
before proceeding.
2 Loosen the plate lock, and place the quick-release
plate/lens assembly into the grooves of the plate
platform.
3 Make sure the quick-release plate is seated properly
in the plate platform, and tighten the plate lock until
secure.
Pro Tips
• It might take several attempts to balance your camera
and lens for the first time. Be patient when following the
instructions above.
• For each setup, use masking tape or a grease pencil
to note the position of the height scale and the quick-
release plate. This will make balancing the camera and
lens much faster in the future.
• To maximize image sharpness, support the camera with
your right hand while resting your left hand on the front
the of the lens.
2 After each adjustment, test the balance by pointing the
lens up and down. If the lens and camera can be tilted
at any angle and remain in place, they are now vertically
balanced.
